Top Ranking Mass Messaging Topics of 2020

The COVID-19 pandemic had a huge impact on businesses and individuals struggled to communicate during stay-at-home orders, capacity restrictions, and working remotely. Many organizations turned to mass messaging as they struggled to communicate urgent information to members, employees, and customers. Some of the topics that emerged were surprising while other well-established trends saw unbelievable increases. Read on to see how the pandemic shaped messaging trends in 2020.

Before we dive into the top ranking messaging topics of 2020. Let’s take a look at how customers of Text-Em-All preferred to send messages this year. Text-Em-All provides users with the ability to deliver urgent messages via text, phone call, or utilizing both (combo). This year the breakdown of messages was as follows;

  • 43% text
  • 29% voice
  • 28% combo

While text messaging is certainly the preferred option for most users, voice messages remained extremely popular. Especially during the early stages of the pandemic in March & April, users relied on voice messages to deliver longer instruction filled calls. You can certainly include more information in a 2-minute recorded message than you can in a single text.

Methodology

To determine messaging topics for the year, we looked at the broadcast name of messages sent by our users and queried for keywords specific to the topic. We then counted the number of messages sent and compared them to data from the previous year.

#1 Virus & Flu

Lots of messages get sent to remind people about flu shots and immunizations. COVID-19 sent this topic to the top of our list with over 50 million messages sent so far in 2020. That’s over 4,000% increase for this category.

#2 Reminders

There are many different types of reminders like those for payments, events, and appointments that get delivered via mass texting or automated calling systems. This category saw a 136% increase with over 22 million messages sent so far in 2020.

#3 Staffing & Hiring

Messages related to job openings and the hiring process are typically our #1 topic. Many companies, and temporary staffing firms, have put hiring on hold - but others (like Amazon) have seen huge increases that still drove a 35% increase over last year.

#4 Prayer

Religious organizations are one of our larger customer segments and moved up a spot from last year with a 305% increase in messages sent. It’s no surprise that people have turned to prayer during the pandemic.
